Stephan Lehmann
Stephan Lehmann is Professor of Classical Archaeology at the Institute for Art History and Archaeology of Europe at the University of Halle-Wittenberg (Germany). He was also director of the Archaeological Museum of Martin Luther University. He studied in Berlin and Bonn, receiving a Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology at the Department of Classical Archaeology in Bonn. He was Associate Professor ("Hochschulassistent") and Lecturer at the Universities of Heidelberg and Erlangen and worked at Museums in Berlin, Bonn and Frankfurt/Main. At the University of Halle-Wittenberg he was habilitated and received his teaching authorization (Venia legendi) for archaeology. His specialty is ancient art, especially Greek and Roman sculpture and portraiture, and he has published widely on this subject. Further research focuses on the cultural history of antiquity and the history of antiquity since the Renaissance; the history of collections of ancient art and objects since antiquity to modern times. The focus of his field work is the Zeus Sanctuary in Olympia, where he first worked on the statues of the Olympic Victors. In collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute, he is currently investigating the history of the sanctuary in the Imperial era and late antiquity. He received a number of fellowships and guest lectureships from the Alexander von Humbodt Foundation, the British Academy, and the German Research Foundation.
